Shooting Near Church May Have been Gang-Related

Newark teen arrested after allegedly firing shots at two people across from sheriff's headquarters Thursday

A 17-year-old city youth is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot at two people near a landmark Newark church Thursday afternoon, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said. Shortly after 2 pm the teen, whose name was not released, fired two shots at an 18-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman as he rode his bike on Victoria Avenue near the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Fontoura said. The two people were unhurt. Sheriff’s officers in the agency’s patrol division headquarters across the street from the church saw the shooting and ran after the youth, who stashed his gun into an air conditioning vent at 66 Summer Ave. during the chase. Police Seek Men Wanted in String of Armed Robberies

  The Essex County Sheriff's Office posted a $5,000 cash reward on Thursday for information that leads to the arrest of two men wanted in connection with 11 armed robberies of convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations in towns in three North Jersey counties since February 1, said Sheriff Armando Fontoura. One of the men has been identified as having robbed and shot the owner of MS&K Confectionery in Maplewood April 1, said Fontoura. The man was also recently identified as allegedly robbing a Belleville convenience store on April 14 and being part of a two-man armed robbery at a liquor store in Linden on April 17. In both incidents, the man was carrying a red messenger bag on his shoulder, which contained zipties that he used to …

Sheriff's Officers Arrest Three Gang Members

One suspect a fugitive from Florida

Three members of the Latin Kings street gang were arrested Wednesday by detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Armando Fontoura said. One of the suspects is a fugitive from Florida apprehended with the help of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office there. Detectives searched a second-floor apartment at 502 N. 4th St. Wednesday and found more than a kilo of cocaine, 167 grams of marijuana and nearly $4,000 in cash. The occupants of the apartment, Jennifer Pisciotta, 27, her boyfriend Victor Lopez, 32, and Jose Colon were all arrested. Pisciotta was also wanted for a probation violation. The couple’s children, two girls aged 8 and 1, were also found at the apartment and turned over to family members.     “The fugitive had …

Guilty Verdict for Newark Man who Carjacked 'Brave' Motorist

A carjacker whose quick-thinking victim escaped by slamming into an Essex County Sheriff’s vehicle was convicted Tuesday by a Superior Court jury in Newark.  Isiah Green, 24, of Newark, was found guilty of kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery as well as carjacking. He faces up to 60 years in prison when he is sentenced in June. On Dec. 20, 2011, Green carjacked his 20-year-old victim in South Orange, then forced her to drive while he groped her. Essex Sheriff Officers Make Unusual Drug Bust

Narcotics worth $75K seized

An ongoing investigation into North Ward narcotics trafficking by the Essex County Sheriff led to the arrest April 12 of a Dominican man, the agency said in a statement.  Detectives from the bureau of narcotics searched a second-floor apartment at 306 N. 5th St. after allegedly witnessing Fray Ovando, 45, leave the residence when a motorist pulled up and beeped the horn. Osvado was also seen handing over an object for cash with Osvado, who is slated to be deported back to the Dominican Republic. Inside the apartment, detectives reportedly found 237 grams of crystal meth, more than a kilo of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia. The undiluted drugs have a street value of $75,000, according to a “conservative” estimate, Essex County Armando …

A groundbreaking is planned this spring for an addition at the Newark Tech High School, featuring an open, flexible and highly adaptable lab to teach technology and act as a new home- base for self-motivated Newark Tech students. The official date of the groundbreaking will be announced in the coming weeks.   The architect, Greg Comito of Newark-based Comito Associates, said the new Technology Enhanced Accelerated Learning Center (TEAL) is designed to provide work zones that can be changed to fit various classroom needs with shifting seating, equipment and storage systems. K-9 Unit Finds Missing Girl Thursday

A K-9 team from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, aided by “Mac,” a bloodhound and three-year veteran of the department, found a 15-year-old girl who had wandered off from a city school Thursday afternoon. The student, who suffers from epilepsy, was last seen at North Star Academy on Clinton Avenue. Newark police contacted the sheriff’s office around 4 pm and requested the assistance of the K-9 unit. Detective Tahir Brown was advised that the female student has a history of wandering away. A city man was arraigned Tuesday on multiple drug charges following his arrest Monday afternoon by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.     Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that as part of an ongoing investigation detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant for the second floor apartment at 303 Sherman Ave.     Fontoura said the sheriff’s detectives established a surveillance operation at that location early on Monday afternoon and observed the target of the investigation, William “Cool Will” Torres, 46, leave the home, and was then followed by detectives who questioned him.       After Torres reportedly admitted he was carrying narcotics, he was searched and found carrying two magazine wrappers, each filled…
