In response to the surge in violence, Mayor Cory Booker has announced that added police patrols put in place for the summer months -- when violence has historically peaked -- will be extended for the foreseeable future. The city will also extend the deployment of officers targeting gun violence.

“The violence we’ve seen over the last 10 days is unacceptable. I am working closely with the police department to ensure it does not continue,” Booker said in a statement.
