Coutinho reportedly drove himself to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston  after experiencing chest pains.

East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador said a member of his staff tried to visit Couthino today. Amador, who suffered a similar heart condition himself several years ago, said he can “sympathize and understand what he’s going through.”

“My prayers are with him that he will get over this tough situation. It’s not something you can overlook and he has to be careful after this,” Amador said.

In the 1990s, Couthino, who turned 44 earlier this month, served on the Newark planning and zoning boards as well as the Essex County Utilities Authority. He has been in the Assembly since 2008.
