Newark Cooling Centers, Pools Open During Heat Wave

Temperatures will hit close to 100 Friday, Saturday and Sunday

With temperatures Friday expected to soar into the 100s, Newark residents can seek refuge at one of the city's six cooling centers.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory Friday for Newark, with a high near 101 under mostly sunny skies. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 a.m., then isolated showers and thunderstorms expected after 4 p.m.

The city's cooling centers will not be open this weekend, when temperatures will reach a high near 97 Saturday and 95 Sunday. But residents are encouraged to stay indoors in the air conditioning or find a cool place, like a shopping center, , swimming pool (see list below) or public library.

"Check on your neighbors, particularly the elderly or the young," said Mayor Cory Booker in a statement. "I urge our senior citizens and Newark residents who lack air conditioning to come to one of our cooling centers, where they can find relief during this hot spell."
